These were my thoughts while reading and watching To Kill a Mockingbird with a tenth grade English class: What if you could drop into the world of a book? What if I could live in Maycomb, Alabama amd meet Atticus and Scout and Jem and Boo Radley in 1930s Alabama? Could I do this and still be me? Would my presence change the story, and would the experience change me?
This is, after all, how books affect readers. We drop into another world for a time, and a worthwhile book, like To Kill a Mockingbird, will change the reader.
As writers, we get to create the world, and drop into the world we create, whether it is historically accurate or pure fantasy. And as writers, we change, too, with the worlds we create.
And by the way, Harper Lee, thank you!
